The Mexican leader recalled that the U.S. was built by migrants from all over the world.

On Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the mistreatment of migrants in the United States, speaking out as the detention facility dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” opened in Florida.

“We do not agree with treating migrants like criminals,” she said, referring to the new detention center inaugurated in Florida with the attendance of U.S. President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Sheinbaum recalled that the United States was built by migrants from all over the world and emphasized the key role that Latinos and Mexicans play in the U.S. economy.

“Labeling a migrant as a criminal or attempting to deport millions of migrants, as they say, will affect the U.S. economy — even from their own perspective. But beyond that, it is a total violation of human rights,” the Mexican leader stressed.

Sheinbaum noted that Mexican migrants deported from the U.S. are immediately received in Mexico “under conditions that do not violate their human rights,” and she reiterated that her administration will defend Mexican nationals “whether they have been there a month, two months, three months, a year, two years, or even 10 or 20 years.”

Her criticism comes one day after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro made similar claims, accusing U.S. authorities of holding 18 Venezuelan children in detention centers where they remain separated from their families.

During his program Con Maduro +, the Bolivarian leader demanded the repatriation of Venezuelan children “as an act of justice and humanity,” and cited the case of 2-year-old Maykelis Espinoza, who returned to Venezuela in May following an international campaign on her behalf.
